Edson Chagas (b.1977, Angola) studied photography in Portugal and the UK. Back in Angola Chagas worked as image editor at the financial newspaper Expansão. In 2013, he represented the first Angolan pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale with the project Luanda, Encyclopedic City, which was awarded the Golden Lion, in the category of best national pavilion. Chagas is distinguished as one of the recipients of the African Art Prize by the Smithsonian African Art Museum. He has been showing work internationally for the last 10 years in various museums around the world such as MoMA, New York, and most recently at TATE Modern, London. Chagas lives and works between Angola and Portugal.
